Having paved the way for success in their own sectors, an exclusive group of Cumbrian business leaders have been hand-picked to help judge the prestigious North West Family Business Awards 2023.
Celebrating the success of family firms across the North West, and inspiring them to shine brighter than ever before, The North West Family Business Awards will take place on Friday the 19th of May 2023 at the unique Concorde Conference Centre, Manchester.
Co-founders of the Family Business Community, Dave Clarkson & Sue Howorth said “We’re so thrilled to be returning to Manchester for 2023 for our North West Family Business Awards, and we are incredibly excited to have such a prestigious set of judges on board, to help us choose our winners for each category. Our judges represent the crème de la crème of businesses in Cumbria. They’ve helped our Awards grow and develop since 2016 and they’re as excited as we are to see the Awards become one of the most important events in the Family Business calendar”
Judging day takes place on Friday March 3rd, and is kindly hosted by the team at Siemens PLC, Near Manchester and is always a real highlight of the awards process. Sue Bagguley from Siemens PLC is also one of the judges and said: “We are honoured to be hosting the judging team again at our HQ as it brings together a very special group of people. We are also excited to be using our experience to help choose the winners and celebrate the best of the best.”
This year, amongst the judges, we welcome Emma and Bobby Sherlock from Stan Sherlock Associates aFinancial Planning firm, based in Carlisle, who said: “It’s a real honour to be asked to judge the NWFBAs – as a family business ourselves, we understand the commitment and dedication it takes, and also the sense of fulfilment you get from preserving the organisation for generations to come.”
We are also delighted to be joined by Chair of the judging team, Jacqui Jackson from Thomas Jardine & Co who – a 5th-generation family business based in Carlisle that helps businesses adapt to change, grow and develop through expert mentoring and consulting services. Jacqui said: “We take all our history and heritage forward to work with leaders and leadership teams of small and mid-sized businesses so we are delighted to be able to use our experience to help judge the 2023 NWFBAs.”
Last but not least we are thrilled to have Claire Story from Carlisle-based Story Decorating Group on the judging panel. A family business for over 40 years, Claire says: “We have never forgotten our roots as a family business and so we are excited to learn more about the award nominees and see how they have retained their own heritage while driving their businesses forward.”
Nominees have up to the 24th February to submit their entries, and you can also nominate a Family Business that you know. The Awards finalists will be revealed on Tuesday 7th March 2023.

With numerous radio and TV shows under his belt, Nigel works on the Simon Mayo Drivetime Show on Greatest Hits Radio and specialises in promoting British ingredients and artisan producers, particularly in his role as chairman of judges for The Great Taste Awards and as a host at Tom Kerridge’s ‘Pub in the Park’ festivals.
